After a life of unique political initiatives and stances, former US Senator and PBI Advisory Board member Mike Gravel has died at the age of 91. Gravel held his Senate seat for two terms, making waves and headlines for his principled positions against America’s military aggressiveness, diminishment of citizen’s rights to know, and the expanding political impunity of the nation’s executive. Gravel’s most recent book, The Failure of Representative Government and the Solution, published earlier this year, emphasizes the importance of citizens reclaiming their role as agents in the making of public policy. His earlier book Citizen Power: A Mandate for Change reflected that same conviction and clearly inspired his role as a strong supporter of the public banking movement. The Public Banking Institute honors and is grateful for his lifetime of courageous leadership. Read The Nation Magazine’s obituary, written by John Nichols.
